Word study

Grade 1 learns about spelling words through "word study", which is focused on learning word patterns rather than memorising unconnected words.  Word study provides students with opportunities to investigate and understand patterns in words.  There are distinct stages in student's spelling development.  Instruction is sequenced by the teacher so students will get instruction to match the children's development.  This knowledge of the patterns means students do not need to learn to spell one word at a time.  The students compared and contrast features in words, do word sorts, hunt for words, construct words and use a word wall.  Below the children are using letters to create different words and look for patterns.
